2019 Spring X Boat Season
Reporting on the last day of Spring, we have concluded three spring X-Boat regattas and with three different winners!
We started the season at the LaBelle Tune up with only a two race regatta. OO-144 Jackson Walker and Camille Bertrand winning the first race and A136 Abbey Eckert winning the second race. Overall all it was tight at the top as 00-144 Jackson Walker took home the championship with 4 points, A25 Austin Barkow was second with 5 points, A-136 Abbey Eckert was third with 6 points. OO747 Sean Mihelich was fourth with 6 points and A-5 Brittany Shabino was fifth with 9 points.
Second regatta was the AJH regatta between boats from Cedar, Oshkosh and Mendota. 23 boats participated with A-136 Abbey Eckert & Alison Heimsch winning the first race and A-42 Nathan Vaupel & Molly Shabino winning the second race. But the regatta winners did not even win a race as they finished with two seconds to secure the low score of 4 points. A-13 Charlie Eckert & Carson Boemer won the regatta with great consistency. A-136 Abbey Eckert & Alison Heimsch were second with 5 points followed by A-42 Nathan Vaupel & Molly Shabino finishing 3rd with 7 points. J-13 Grace Toney & Kate Lynn and A-5 Brittany Shabino & Jakob Eckert rounded out 4th and 5th.
The final spring regatta was held on Nagawicka with the Quint regatta. This was a competitive regatta with some great competition. Four races were sailed in challenging conditions with 3 different race winners. OO-747 Sean Mihelich & Quinn O-Dell won the first race going away. V-61 Charlie Allen & Will Utz won race two in a tight battle. Then 11 year old and first year skipper V-95 John Lieber & Nora Laus led from start to finish to get his first X boat win. The last race had V-61 Allen & Utz way out in front until a few quality shift picks by V-10 Cole Schweda & Anna Lieber caught up to team 61 but Charlie and Will fought off the challenge to win the race and the overall championship. This was his second year in a row winning this championship. V-61 had 11 total points. OO-747 Mihelich & O’Dell were second with 12 points and X-31 Henry Ackley & Grayson Bruss in third with 15 points were third. V-10 Schweda & Lieber were 4th with 22 points. V-95 Lieber & Laus rounded out the top five with 29 points.
After three regattas it looks like the rest of the season will be a dog fight as there are some very good young X boat sailors. We will be at all the major regattas reporting the results live on Instagram and full reports on the official X boat site that you are viewing now.
On to the TRAP regatta next week at pine. Irwin R. Fletcher.
